And the Winner is…

Posted by on August 3, 2016

On Monday, campers awoke to another jam packed day filled with exciting Color War activities.  Track and swim meets happened simultaneously in the morning, while some campers instead did their part to support their teams by participating in a heated tennis tournament, a doubles giant chess match, and a ping pong battle! Our artists continued to work on their team benches and plaques. After taking a break to enjoy a silent lunch followed by team cheers, campers had some time to rest back in their bunks and write some letters home.  The afternoon was filled with excitement as well.  Critters competed in dodgeball and soccer matches while the Prowlers played each other in volleyball and street hockey.  The Timbers and Summits battled it out in games of softball, flag football, British longball, and capture the flag.  Both teams continued to work tirelessly on learning and perfecting their songs and cheers for the upcoming SING.  Last night’s all-camp color war activity was the much anticipated annual Clue Hunt. The Blue and Gold teams were busy solving riddles to find out the destination around camp where they could uncover their next clues before solving their final riddles.   It was a close fight to the finish!

This morning’s wake up song, “The Final Countdown,” reminded us all that Color War would soon be coming to a close. Our younger campers got a little break from the competition this morning and spent some time at the pool and waterfront as the older campers participated in some final unit activities. After team rallies to put the finishing touches on their SING performances, both teams prepared for the culminating events of the past three days: The Micah Marathon and SING.

Both teams raced their hearts out during the Micah Marathon and competed throughout the entire camp at this annual relay race. The final leg of the race, the Rope Burn, was like none we’ve ever seen and in the end, Gold was victorious.

After a satisfying chili dinner, both teams got all cleaned up and headed down to Uncle Milt’s Performing Arts Center dressed in their team’s traditional SING attire. After the presentation of the team plaques, cheers, alma maters, and free songs, the Color War Committee deliberated. In the end, the winner of SING was declared, along with the overall winner for Color War 2016 – the GOLD TEAM!

Congratulations to both teams for one of the best Color War competitions we’ve seen in quite some time. The Committee, coaches, captains, and co-captains did an amazing job leading the camp for three days and everyone is in need of some well-deserved rest. Goodnight Bridgton and Sebago!

Let the Games Begin!

A Lion, a Tin Man, a Scarecrow, OH MY!  Second Session Color War Broke last evening during our Shabbat cookout.  As campers were happily enjoying dessert after a delicious meal, they couldn’t help but notice the rev of an engine heard overhead.  As everyone quickly turned their eyes towards the sky, mouths dropped as they witnessed an airplane dragging a massive banner that said: “I’LL GET YOU MY PRETTY…AND YOUR CW TOO!”   On the ground below, “Miss Gulch” came riding through our cookout location on a bicycle with a sign on “her” back saying: FOLLOW ME!  The entire camp quickly rose to their feet and ran in hot pursuit after “Miss Gulch” towards our campfire location.  Running up the path towards campfire, the ground was covered in blue, gold, and maroon paint splatter. The campers were told to follow, follow, follow, follow, follow the Color War Road. Further along the path campers ran by The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion, The Scarecrow, and Dorothy while heart thumping music played in the background as they made their way towards the final destination: The Emerald City.  As they reached the top of the campfire path, a large house was resting upon a pair of legs wearing striped leggings and ruby slippers.  In the Emerald City, campers were greeted by Glinda the Good Witch and The Wizard of Oz himself.  Once all of the characters were reunited, and the Wicked Witch was defeats, the Color War Committee and coaches were revealed. Second Session Color War was officially underway!

Today was filled with wonderful competition and sportsmanship. After our annual tug-o-war to kick off Color War, units split up to compete in athletic endeavors. Many artists began work on the team’s Bench Picassos and plaques, lyrics were being written for today’s silent lunch cheer break, and lots of strategizing could be seen as teams prepared for this afternoon’s all camp activity: Search Party (a massive came of hide and seek, with lots of twists). After dinner, units participated in activities including Minute to Win It, Capture the Fralad (fruit salad), Escape the Room, the Spelling Bee, and an All-Star Basketball Game. All the campers gave their all today and we’re certain they’ll sleep well tonight!

A reminder that there is late sleep during Color War and our meals (and phone call times) shift. You can reach your camper during breakfast at 9am, lunch at 1pm, or dinner at 6:15.

Tie-Dye Thursday

Posted by on July 29, 2016

This morning at flag, before enjoying the yummy egg sandwiches for breakfast, it was easy to decipher what day of the week it was based on everyone’s attire…HAPPY TIE-DYE THURSDAY, Camp Micah!

Campers spent today engrossed in activities.  They are eager to continue their progress on ongoing projects before second session comes to a close in just a few short weeks.  In metalsmithing, campers were putting the final finishing touches on gorgeous rings they have created out of copper and semi-precious stones.  In woodworking, a few ambitious Lower Summit girls are working on completing an Adirondack chair for their cabin next summer.  Eventually this chair will be signed by all the 2017 G14 girls and left as a gift to all future G14ers who will get to enjoy it in the years to come!

In other news, our Upper Timbers returned from their canoe trip along the Saco River late this afternoon.  Our rising 8th graders spent yesterday swimming and bonding with their grade and today they paddled 3 miles in canoes along the scenic Saco River.  It was great to have them back tonight for dinner and hear them telling other campers all about their recent adventures!

Trip Day Fun

Posted by on July 28, 2016

After a late wake up, the camp gathered in the Dining Hall for a delicious waffle breakfast! Afterwards, units loaded their buses and vans and headed out for their adventures. The Critters put on their game faces as they competed in mini golf and then visited the Maine Wildlife Park. The Prowlers and Lower Timbers stayed cool on this hot day at Splashtown and Aquaboggan. Our Upper Timbers departed on their annual overnight canoe trip. The Summits cheered on the home team at the Portland Sea Dogs game and then spent the afternoon in the Old Port.

Tonight, our Lower Timbers and Summits danced the night away while the Critter Boys and Prowlers participate in unit activities and the Critter Girls got their turn to sleep at our campsite here on Micah’s grounds.

Intercamps, Hiking, and Spoon Game…Oh My!

Posted by on July 27, 2016

It was an incredibly busy day here at Micah! We woke up to gorgeous weather and everyone was ready to start another fantastic day. Amidst all of our regularly scheduled activities, groups of campers traveled to neighboring camps for 12U boys soccer, 13U girls basketball, and 15U girls tennis. If that wasn’t enough, we also welcomed a 15U boys soccer team to Micah to host an intercamp of our own. We tallied up a lot more wins for Micah today as our victories continued! Tonight, after dinner, B15 and G14 traveled to Bridgton Sports Camp for our annual night basketball game. It’s always such fun to have the Micah cheering section echoing throughout their gym for this special evening activity. For the first time in four years, Micah brought home a huge win!! Go blue and gold!

Today we welcomed back a group of passionate hikers from a three day trip to Mt. Katahdin – Baxter State Park, the highest mountain in the state of Maine. These 6 campers had an amazing experience and we’re so proud of them for reaching the summit of such a difficult climb!

Second session brought with it the start of The Spoon Game here at Micah. This silly game has been going on for about five days now and we’re down to our final 20 competitors! We’ll be declaring winners soon!
