The Final Days

Posted by on August 10, 2016

The past few days of camp here in Maine have been spent enjoying our final scheduled activity days. Some campers participated in hikes on Sunday and Monday, others got to enjoy an out-of-camp outdoor rock climbing trip, or our annual photography trip to North Conway, NH. We even held the annual Micah Cup (a sailing race on Peabody Pond). Sunday night brought with it the final dance of the summer for the Timbers and Summits, and our CITs had their last trip out of camp for dinner and fun as a group.

On Monday night, the entire camp gathered in Uncle Milt’s for our second session play, Jewstice League – an original theatrical performance all about heroes. The largest cast in Micah history, over 100 campers, dazzled everyone with their talent, humor, and hard work.

Tuesday morning was filled with final individual schedules. The afternoon, on the other hand, was a wacky one! The 2016 Trading Block opened for campers and staff, participants in the second session Island Swim headed off on their swimming race at the waterfront, and the pool and Micah Ninja Warrior course were open for campers to enjoy. G14 surprised the camp by announcing their annual “Messy Monday” event (which was on a Tuesday). Campers headed to the football field to be covered in paint, bubbles, silly string, and more messiness. You’re welcome to parents that you didn’t have to be part of the clean up!

Tonight, the Summit campers and staff headed to the waterfront for a special beach cookout to celebrate the summer while the rest of the camp enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving-style dinner. Everyone is now snug in their beds before we wake up tomorrow for one last full day here at our home away from home.

Goodnight Bridgton & Sebago!

Shabbat Shalom, Camp Micah!

Posted by on August 6, 2016

On Friday, campers awoke to beautiful temperatures and sunny skies.  After enjoying a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit and eggs, our Fiber Arts campers set off to an alpaca farm to spend a wonderful morning discovering where the art materials they have been using this summer actually come from!  We also sent some of our 13U athletes to a baseball intercamp against Kingswood where they were victorious with a 17-4 win.  Several other campers chose to take advantage of a hike heading out to Blueberry Mountain on this glorious day.  During this hiking adventure, campers cooled off by jumping into Rattlesnake Pool for a little fun in the sun before making their way back to Micah.

Campers who stayed back at Micah enjoyed their regular activities and challenged themselves to complete personal goals before leaving camp in just a few days.  Several campers worked hard to receive their waterfront bracelets which are earned by trying a wide variety of activities down at the waterfront including sailing, waterskiing, canoeing, and paddle boarding, just to name a few!  Other campers were busy practicing swimming skills during instructional swim in the hopes of moving up to the next swim level during their upcoming swim tests.  As Friday’s activities came to a close, our entire Micah community joined together to enjoy a delicious Shabbat meal and spent some time looking back and reflecting on the amazing summer we have been enjoying over the past 7 weeks.

Saturday morning brought with it our weekly Shabbat buffet breakfast and some extra sleep for our older campers. We also bid farewell to our Micah in Israel campers as they headed back to MA to reunite with their parents. The morning consisted of Open Choice, an optional hike up Baldpate, and Tikkuna Matata activities. Our Summit Girls go tto participate in a special activity this week. Thanks to a grant from Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP) and The Miriam Fund, our rising 9th and 10th graders experienced a self-defense Krav Maga training session.

After Rest Hour, camp “families” got to spend their weekly time together with fun activities planned by the Head Counselors. This afternoon was our annual Arts Day, complete with jewelry making, caricature drawing, bookmark and pet rock making, drama games, music performances, and, to cap it all off, the second session Dance Show!

Campers are now heading up to our campfire site to enjoy the final campfire of the summer and to say goodbye to Shabbat with our last Havdalah ceremony. It feels like we were just getting the summer started with our first campfire of the season and, in the blink of an eye, we’ll be singing the Camp Micah Alma Mater for one of the last times tonight.

Shabbat Shalom and Sweet Dreams!

Welcome Home, Micah in Israel!

Posted by on August 5, 2016

Today was an exciting day at Micah! This morning we welcomed home our Micah in Israel campers after five and a half wonderful weeks in Poland and Israel. There were so many hugs and smiles shared as our world travelers filed off of the bus. We cannot wait to hear more about their adventures in the days to come!

Micah hosted our first 15U Girls’ Volleyball tournament. Though our Micah girls did not prevail, they did make it to the finals! The team ended up playing all three sets, and though they fell behind in the third, they put forward an amazing effort. Way to go, ladies!

Our Ninja Warrior course continues to be all the buzz, and we have been so fortunate to work with various “ninjas” throughout the summer. Today we welcomed Jesse “Flex” Labreck, a contestant on American Ninja Warrior, who will be competing on the television show in just a few short weeks. Not only is she an incredible athlete (she makes the 14 foot wall look easy!) but she is also an amazing teacher. Campers truly benefitted from her tips and advice on how to be a real life ninja. Micah wishes her good luck in her upcoming competition!

This evening, the Critters and Prowlers enjoyed an outdoor dance party, while the Timbers and Summits watched an up and coming musician, Michael McArthur, perform acoustically. We have had some gorgeous starry nights up here in Bridgton, and we can’t believe that the summer is coming to a close in one week from today.
