Happy Birthday, America!

Posted by on July 6, 2016

Last night, campers piled into the Dining Hall dressed in their 4th of July best!  We saw every combination of red, white, and blue t-shirts, headbands, shorts, bandanas, and socks and even enjoyed a special guest appearance from Lady Liberty herself! Everyone enjoyed the fun- filled patriotic themed Hoe Down dinner equipped with all the fixings!  The giant sized ribs, cornbread, fried chicken, and green beans were a BIG and messy hit!  Before the meal, Mark shared an inspiring video clip entitled: LOVE HAS NO LABELS challenging us all to think about what it means to be truly patriotic.  Throughout the remainder of the meal, campers and staff joined together to sing festive songs about America and freedom. Not to be outdone by the theme dinner, Unit Leaders planned exciting 4th of July inspired activities throughout the evening for campers to enjoy as well.  The celebration continues as everyone is eagerly anticipating our upcoming annual 4th of July carnival happening tomorrow. This culminating event of our festive few days is always a camp favorite.

Today, camp was abuzz with inter-camp excitement!  We had soccer, basketball, kickball, and hockey competitions happening both here at Micah and away at other local camps.  It was exciting to witness campers cheering on and supporting all of the athletes participating in these events. Fun Fact: After five long years, Camp Micah revived its popular street hockey tournament. The 15U boys made it to the finals and were victorious against Bridgton Sports Camp with a 3-0 win. Our 11U Boys Kickball team was victorious as well against Camp Wigwam after a four-round tournament.  WAY TO GO MICAH!

Campers are now off to bed dreaming about the big carnival kicking off after breakfast tomorrow morning.  Sweet Dreams!

Sunday, Funday!

Posted by on July 4, 2016

We woke up this morning to another beautiful, sunny day in Bridgton. G14 took advantage of this glorious weather and went on a bunk hike to Emerald Pool in North Fryeburg, ME. The entire bunk participated in this bonding experience and everyone had a great time.

The rest of us enjoyed a return to regular activities after a restful Shabbat. It was exciting to watch our Prowlers learning to pick and roll at basketball, our Timbers completing some high ropes challenges, and our Critters taking a chance on waterskies down at Peabody Pond. Everywhere you looked, campers were engaged and smiling, all while practicing important skills at their activities.

The energy and excitement of the dining hall at dinner was infectious and carried through to evening activities. Our Prowler girls were especially spirited in their own rendition of Extreme Makeover: Counselor Edition. “Celebrity” judges saw many creative costumes and heard witty bios about each counselor model. Be sure to ask them about “Sassy Susan” and “Simba from Outer Space” when you talk to them next.

We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings as we ring in the Fourth of July with a special patriotic “Hoe Down” themed dinner, complete with ribs and cornbread. Happy Birthday, America!

Shavua Tov

Posted by on July 3, 2016

As we said goodbye to Shabbat at our weekly havdallah ceremony at campfire tonight, we’re all thankful for an amazing week and looking forward to another great one ahead. Today was spent relaxing, reflecting, learning, and playing as we celebrated Shabbat the Micah way.

Our Shabbat theme of the week is courage and all around camp, kids were learning about the topic in their own ways. From learning about this week’s Torah portion and the courageous spies that scoped out the land of milk and honey, to discussing the courageous leadership of Malala Yousafzai, all the campers connected to the theme of the week on their own level. Other highlights of the day included our special weekly Shabbat buffet breakfast, free time at the pool and Micah Ninja Warrior Course, and special activities with our Camp Sisters and Spazzaweewee Brothers.

We’re all looking forward to the week ahead!

Shabbat is Here!

Posted by on July 2, 2016

It’s hard to believe that our second Shabbat of camp has already arrived. We have had a very busy week here at Micah, with Trips Day, the start of intercamps, and play rehearsals already in full swing.

On Wednesday, our Critter, Prowler, and Timber units all traveled to various movie theatres in the area and followed up with sweet treats at some local ice cream spots. The Summits were a bit more daring at “Get Air” – a local trampoline park. We closed out the evening with our first dance of the summer for Timbers and Summits, and a pool party for the Critters and Prowlers.

At Camp Micah, there are many opportunities for our athletes to compete against other local summer camps. These intercamp competitions are held for all ages in a variety of sports. This week, our 10U girls played soccer against Fernwood Cove and our 13U boys travelled to Wigwam to play flag football. As always, our campers had a lot of fun – Go Micah!

This week we welcomed Rabbi Lipof back to camp. We love to have her here to lead our Friday night services. Her signature stories are something we all look forward to hearing in the chapel. This week, our Shabbat theme is “courage.” The Rabbi’s story touched upon how even when we feel like we don’t quite fit in, we can be brave, put ourselves out there, and have the courage to make new friends. We all have a place at Camp Micah. As a reminder of this, each bunk was asked to decorate a blank puzzle all together. Each camper and counselor will get a piece to keep as a reminder that the puzzle could never be complete without each one of them.

Shabbat Shalom!
